Heart Burn  Myth or a Fact?

Heart burn is due to excess acid...

This popular belief is buttressed by the fact that we frequently treat heartburn or abnormal acid reflux by antacids and acid blocking medications. Heartburn is not due to excess acid in most instances. In fact, the actual amount of acid in the stomach is normal. However, the acid is at the wrong place, i.e. it is going up from the stomach to the esophagus. Because of lack of effective drugs aimed at the underlying factors promoting acid reflux, the treatment is targeted at the acid instead.

Heart Burn

Heartburn is a feeling of burning, warmth, heat, or pain that often starts in the upper abdomen just beneath the lower breastbone (sternum). This discomfort may spread in waves upward into your throat, and you may have a sour taste in your mouth. Heartburn is sometimes called indigestion, acid regurgitation, sour stomach, or pyrosis. It is not caused by problems with your heart, although sometimes heart problems can feel like heartburn.

Heartburn may cause problems with swallowing, burping, nausea, or bloating. These symptoms can sometimes last up to 2 hours or longer. In some people, heartburn symptoms may cause sleep problems, a chronic cough, asthma, wheezing, or choking episodes.

One in 10 Americans experiences heartburn symptoms at least once a week. Heartburn has different triggers, including certain foods, medications, obesity, or even stress. Knowing your triggers will help you design a prevention strategy. If you suffer from heartburn it’s important to find effective heartburn remedies to prevent the acid reflux from worsening. Heartburn treatment may include medications, home remedies, or diet changes.
