Hepatitis D Virus (HDV) |

HDV is a defective virus and needs the presence of Hepatitis B virus in order to cause problems. Thus, it may infect the person along with HBV or may be a superimposed upon a person already infected with HBV. Hepatitis D infection is more severe than Hepatitis B alone. HDV is rare in the U.S. Interferon therapy helps in some patients. It is a preventable disease. Prevent HBV by measures described above and you will prevent HDV. |

Hepatitis E Virus (HEV) |
|||
HEV behaves like Hepatitis A virus. It is transmitted via contaminated food or water. It is rare in the U.S. Diagnosis is difficult. Like HAV, it causes only acute and not chronic hepatitis. HEV infection has serious consequences in pregnant women and carries a five to 25% mortality. Treatment is supportive. Prevention involves improvement of sanitary conditions. |
