Depression can be devastating to all areas of a person’s everyday life including family relationships, friends, and ability to work or go to school. Many people believe that the symptoms of depression are not "real" and that it could be shaken off by the individual if they just tried.

Because of the inaccurate beliefs that depression causes, people either may not recognize that they have a treatable disorder or may be discouraged from seeking help or staying on any treatment due to feelings of shame and guilt. Too often untreated depression leads to suicide.
