I know that a long time has passed since this question was posted, but I thought I might give some insight on it anyway. The same thing happened to me. Lost my voice for several weeks after a cold. Ever since then, it would happen every time I used my voice too much or got a cold - only for a shorter amount of time (1-2 weeks). I finally went to a doctor who sent me to an ENT, who put a scope down my throat and discovered that there were polyps on my vocal cords and anytime I spoke too much, had a cold, or drank alcohol, the polyps would become inflamed and made me lose my voice. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, don't whisper or sing too much, and only talk when necessary for a while (a couple of months). If you don't try to follow these directions, there's a good chance you will end up needing surgery to remove them. Good news for me...I haven't had a recurrence for 3 years (since I gave up alcohol altogether)!
