How can I stop the white discharge from corner of eye?

Hi,

I'm 43 and have had this problem for years. With no other symptoms, I get a discharge of a milky white substance that sort of "leaks" out of the corners of both eyes. It's especially bad when I'm warm and it's sunny. Occasionally my eyes are dry (I'm on the computer alot), but I have no other symptoms. Any ideas of what it is or how to stop it? An optician I spoke to suggested that it's the way my eyes clean themselves, but I've never met anyone else with this problem. I'd love to figure out how to get rid of it.
