I am a 27 year old female in good shape. Often I get a sharp shooting pain on the left side of my chest (sometimes it's on the right, but mainly it is on the left). In the past, it has been on the top of my breast, but lately it has been under my left breast. It comes on out of nowhere. Sometimes I'll be watching TV, driving, teaching my second graders, so I don't think it is related to panic or stress (since many times I am completely relaxed). It sometimes happens just once, and then stops. However, lately it will last for at least a few minutes or will occur every time I take a deep breath. I have had chest pain in the past and once went to the doctor to get an EKG (I think that it is what it was). The first time the doctor was a little nervous with the fluctuation and had me come in the next week for another one. This one was more normal. Every once in a while a doctor will comment about an irregular beat. I want to know what it is--because occassionally the pain brings tears to my eyes & other times it is just plain scary--because of where I am at (driving or teaching). Any clue what it might be? I sort of have a family history of heart problems (mainly holes in the heart at birth--my sister, niece, 2 nephews, and 2 cousin all had one. All were corrected with surgery). My dad's mother died at 44 of a heart defect.
