I have had similiar pains my entire life. For me, I am sometimes stopped "mid-breath" by a sharp sensation under my left nipple. It feels very much like my lungs might "pop". By stopping the inhalation and exhaling fully and holding it for a couple seconds, I can resume normal breathing. The most odd thing about this is that it only occurs if I have been more or less sedentary for a couple months. When I work out regularly, I have gone years without a single event. If I stop working out, they return. The best explaination that I have received is that there is some rubbing going on between my lung and the membrane around it. There may be a tear in the membrane that causes the gas or fluid that separates the two to escape. For some odd reason, the cardi excercise keeps the membrane properly "inflated". At least that was the best guess my doctor came up with. X-rays were negative. She didn't seem too concerned since I knew how to get them to stop (go running). Let me know if any of this sounds familiar to anyone.
