Jackie,
In a "normal" menstural cycle, the first day of bleeding is, by convention, referrered to as Day 1. During this time, the inside lining of the uterus is discarding in preparation for the production of a new, fresh one. In the typical 28 day cycle, women will ovulate (produce an egg) around the middle of the cycle. On average, this is at about day 12-16. THIS is the time when sperm hitting egg = pregnancy. If your cycle is regular and predictable, you would be very unlikely to become pregnant during sex while having your period. If your periods are irregular and unpredictable, all bets are off.
Keep in mind, too, that sperm can stay alive for about 24 hours and the egg can also stay around for a day or so after the day of ovulation. This means that there is a window of opportunity of about 4 days during which a woman is likely to become pregnant each month. That's assuming you know the exact day of ovulation.
My advice, give some strong consideration to a reliable contraception. Let me know if you have any questions.
