Ovulation occurs during the ovulatory menstrual cycle which is divided in to three phases. The first, preovulatory, starting at the first day of cycle extends to what is known as "preovulatory LH surge. The duration of this preovulatory phase is extremelely variable. During the LH surge, there is release of LH (hormone) from our pituitary glands, and after about 16-36 hours of this surge, ovum is released from follicles. The luteal or the postovulatory phase occurs after the ovulatory phase. In contrast to preovulatory phase, the post-ovulatory phase duration is fairly constant i.e. about 14 days.
