Usually when the discharge is pathologis, it is not clear and findings are seen on vaginal exam. for example: Bacterial vaginosis has discharge with fishy odor , itching etc. there grayish discharge and pH is tested to be >4.5. Usually no redness or inflammation is seen.
Candida vaginitis has itching and a thick white discharge. Redness swelling are seen on exam. Trichomonas vaginitis has profuse frothy yellowish green discharge with alkaline pH. This may have fishy odor too.
